The difference is not only in the thickness, but also in the way the gold is applied:
Gold plating is an extremely thin layer (0.1–3 microns) applied chemically, through electroplating. This layer does not adhere deeply and will easily peel off, especially with friction or contact with moisture.
Gold-filled, on the other hand, is made through a mechanical process — the gold is pressed at high temperatures and pressure, becoming an integrated part of the structure, not just a film on the surface.
These two essential differences — the thickness of the gold and the method of application — make gold filled:
