Black pearls - are they natural or "fake"?
We get this question a lot: yes, natural black pearls exist! They are formed by a certain type of oyster, called Pinctada margaritifera from the Tahiti area. The inner side of these types of oysters has a black band that is not present in other types of oysters. If the pearl forms close to this black band, it will absorb this color and become black. Black pearls vary in color depending on where inside the oyster they formed. If they are closer to the "mouth" of the oyster, they will have shades of gray, the more they are formed towards the inside of the oyster, the darker shades of black they will be.
