What is the difference between gold filled and gold plated?
What is spun gold jewelry?
Gold-plated jewelry contains 100 times more gold than gold-plated or vermeil jewelry, so it can last 10-20 years of wear. It is a more affordable choice than pure gold jewelry and more versatile, because gold-plated is easier to work with, there is a wide range of gold-plated jewelry designs. What is the difference between gold jewelry, gold-plated jewelry, and gold-plated/vermeil jewelry?
There are two major differences between spun gold jewelry and gold-plated or vermeil jewelry.
The first is the amount of gold used. Gold-plated jewelry contains, by law, 5% pure gold, while vermeil and plated jewelry contain a maximum of 0.5% pure gold, 100 times less than gold-plated jewelry. As a result, gold-plated jewelry looks like solid gold, without the orange color typical of plated or vermeil jewelry.
The second difference is the method of making these alloys. Gold-plated is made by bonding a thick layer of gold on the outside and a layer of metals on the inside under high pressure at high temperatures. This process was created to give the material durability over time. Gold-plated jewelry is made by electrolysis, whereby gold particles are placed on the alloy.
